Real Friends vs Facebook Friends

Today if I ask you to avoid Facebook, your immediate reaction could be two questions.

1. How would I keep in touch with friends?

2. What do I do with my free time if I don’t use Facebook?

Real Friends vs Facebook Friends

In this article, I will try to answer both these questions for you.

You must understand that your social network connections are very different from true friendships. What Facebook actually helps is to satisfy the voyeuristic urge to know what is happening in the other person’s life. It is actually an intrusion into privacy. Avoid Facebook and use one to one means to keep in touch with friends. Do some interesting activities together such as meet up for a party or go out for a trek.

When you avoid Facebook and plan activities by sitting around and actually talking to each other, then friendships become stronger and more meaningful. You will then notice that you give your friends the space they need while at the same time being an integral part of all the important occasions in their lives. You will thus have friendships that will last for a much longer period. You may not be keeping in touch every day, but whenever you meet you will find it extremely easy to catch up with them and start off from where you left off the last time you met with them. It will also mean that your friends will be there for you when you genuinely need them. Setbacks in life occur for every one of us. How well we bounce back from them, also depend on how strong our friendships are and how much they will root for us. Facebook does not aide in maintaining such friends. Therefore avoid Facebook and focus on having true friends.

Once you manage to successfully avoid Facebook, you will notice that you have a lot of free time. Make use of this time to engage in some productive activity. Take care of your health as without health you cannot achieve anything in life. Make it a point to get some exercise on a daily basis. Get in touch with your spiritual side. Set aside some time to meditate and reflect quietly on the day gone by before you hit the bed. This introspection will help you to identify areas of improvement as well as be happy about your achievements for the day. Say a mental prayer of thanks for all the wonderful things in your life. Once you have taken care of the physical and spiritual side of your life, the next step is to have a financially secure future. This may sound quite ‘uncool’ if you are a teenager, but the earlier you start, the easier it is to get rich. The power of compounding ensures that your money grows with time. Spend the time that you save by ignoring Facebook in learning new concepts around Finance or any other area that catches your fancy. Try to be an expert in that area than being a jack of all trades. Remember that by updating your status messages or playing games in Facebook or even liking some pages you are not doing any good to yourselves. Time is a precious commodity and you need to learn to use it effectively.

Do not wait till tomorrow. Start today and stop using Facebook to keep yourselves entertained. There are better and healthier options available to you out there. Go out there and be the difference that you want to see in the world. Make the best use of your life in order to be a successful and content human being.
